United to End Cervical Cancer in Egypt

Associate member Dr. Amal El-Sisi has been deeply involved in the Program of Scale: United to End Cervical Cancer in Egypt. Rotary and partners are collaborating to support an evidence-based program to lead public awareness campaigns about cervical cancer prevention, and train health care workers to promote and distribute the vaccine in order to increase understanding about HPV and broaden the demand for vaccines and screenings. These efforts intend to lead to prevention, early detection and quicker treatment of HPV infections and cervical cancer. You can read the year-one report here (PDF). Making a Difference in Costa Rica

Member Nancy Laible and associate member Steve Laible recently traveled to Costa Rica with Steve’s Brooklyn Park, MN home club. he team completed two service projects. One of the projects was at Santa Cruz, where Nancy ventured into a ‘tin shack’ Barrio to deliver female hygiene information and supplies. The team delivered 30 DFG kits to the young mothers who live in the flimsy and unsanitary housing.
There was no classroom facility in this poor neighborhood, so a makeshift classroom was assembled, outside, with a folding table and plastic chairs – the primary furnishings of many of the shanty homes.
A Passion for Energy Equity

Member Aur Beck is an advocate for energy equity and passionate about helping everyone have access to electricity. In May of 2014, he presented to our club about the Million Solar Panel. View the recording here or read a summary of his presentation here.
Aur is currently working with clubs in Cape Cod on a solar chicken farm at a school in Nepal. He also volunteers many hours with ESRAG ( Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group) as founder and co-chair of the Renewable Energy Task Force Their goal is to encourage, educate and offer support for renewable energy projects worldwide. It is a bit overwhelming but fun working with Rotarians all over the world.
ESRAG’s two most active subcommittees are:
- Million Solar Panel Challenge where they are educating and documenting solar projects around the world. They are also currently a cash Solar Prize for projects.
- Habitat Solar where we have written a manual on how to do a solar project on a low income house and gotten the manual approved by both Habitat for Humanity International and Rotary International
Transforming Women’s Lives in Pokhara, Nepal
