A Very Successful Grant in Egypt

By Nancy Davis, Chair, Hope for Liver Cancer Patients in Egypt and Rotary Global Travelers Member

Global Travelers’ small international project – Hope for Liver Cancer Patients in Egypt – is now complete. The generous support of our collaborating clubs made this possible and we offer our sincere thanks.  Thirteen clubs in 3 Rotary districts contributed to the grant and 27 Rotarians traveled to Egypt last month to meet members of our host club – Cairo Elite.  We became good friends in a short time.  Together we spent a morning at one of the satellite screening clinics in Mansoura Village near Sherbin, which is about 100 miles NE of Cairo.  The first 5 attached pictures are from that morning.  Members of Cairo Elite are all wearing red vests.  Our group handed out educational material that focused on identifying signs and symptoms of liver disease.   Next is the president of Cairo Elite – Rania Shalaby – and Global Travelers incoming president – Melanie DeLuca.  We were given a tour of the Egyptian Liver Research Institute and Hospital by Dr. Farahat, who has been vital to this project.  He is seen in the next picture.  The hospital is a modern 100 bed facility with 14 specialized outpatient clinics.  I’ve included a picture of a patient undergoing the medical procedure for liver cancer and pictures of the nurses training sessions.  Overall, this grant paid for 45 patient procedures and specialized training for 40 nurses.
