Travel as Fundraising

Part of the mission of Global Travelers is to “serve the world.” And one way to serve the world is by funding grants for projects like clean water, liver cancer treatment, STEM education for girls, and many others. Funding those grants takes money. For most Rotary clubs, some of the money comes from member donations and some from fundraising activities like a fancy dinner, a golf tournament, a pub crawl, or a bike race.

As a virtual club with geographically dispersed members, that type of fundraising doesn’t work for us. We’re exploring other options, and one of them is travel as a fundraiser. Some travel companies provide a “rebate” when a group of people travel together. Group travel saves the travel company money because they don’t have to sell and market to the participants. The travel organizer does that work for them. So the travel company provide an incentive for groups who meet a certain threshold of participants.

Fundraising
Danube 1

Our club’s first fundraising trip was a Danube River Cruise in November 2024, organized by member Mike Philson. 10 club members and 5 of their friends and family participated.

The cruise started in Vilshopen, Germany, and ended in gorgeous Budapest, Hungary. You can watch the video of Melanie’s trip report to learn more about the cruise. And see more pictures below.

Participants had a great time and really loved the opportunity to raise money for our club while exploring the world. In a recent survey, club members definitely endorsed travel as a fundraising technique. Makes sense, right? We’re a group of global travelers.  Thanks to Mike Philson’s efforts, we have several more fundraising trips in the works.
