Have you ever tried to apply for a visa online and received a message that your photo is too large? Or have you had issues uploading your photo or background image to the directory on this website?
Making a photo smaller (meaning fewer megabytes) is relatively easy, once you find the right tool.

If you are using a Windows computer, double-click on your photo and you will launch the Photos application. From the toolbar at the top, you might choose to edit your photo (icon on the left). Perhaps you want to crop it to take out some background and focus on your face. Your ultimate goal is to make your image smaller. Select the … icon on the right.

When you select the three dots (more options) you get a menu like the one on the left. Select “Resize image” and you’ll get the “Resize” menu on the right.
You can reduce the width and height of your picture, or the reduce the quality, or both. Keep your eye on the new size at the bottom of the display. Keep manipulating your image until you reach the KB required by the website. Then save your image (probably with a new name) and you’re ready to upload.

If you are using a Mac, you’ll find similar capabilities to change an image size in the “Preview” app.
The iPhone doesn’t have a built-in way to reduce the size of an image (at least not that I could find). A number of applications are available from the App store that will reduce the size of an image.
